Among the typical flurry of New Years resolutions and deliberately forgotten mistakes of 2011, 2012 is likely to see some great home renovations and interior design ideas. Sadly, Harvard University projects that home improvement spending will be down in the coming year; but don’t despair—where there’s a will, there’s a way.  The Hallberg family in Palo Alto, CA just spent $500,000 to renovate their modern “post-and-beam” Eichler home, so likely they are trying to prove us wrong.

You may find that your renovations turn out to be a micro-level, multi-faceted exercise in the placement of bathroom light switches, like in Pam Kueber’s video blog. But then again, your trip down Home Modification Lane could take you to completely awesome new horizons:

Vertical Bathtub  – You may not see the immediate genius of this space-saving invention, but be honest with yourself– don’t you want to be the first on your block to have one?

1-Square Meter Cube Kitchen – If you’re a Cubist lover with something to prove, this kitchen may provide the discipline and perfect angles you need to feel at home.  When you’re done eating, you can hide the breakfast nook away like you were never there in the first place.

Sticker-Bomb Decorating– Have you ever just given up on cleaning up after your child? Or maybe your entire family is colorblind? This design was apparently entirely child-created, where children were handed packs of stickers and unleashed on a room with free reign.

Bed, Ahoy!– How much do you like ships? Maybe you like them enough to re-design your bedroom like a pirate’s wet dream, or maybe you just can’t shake those sea legs. Whatever the reason, this homeowner’s modifications have made (…wait for it…)…a big splash.

Washin’ with the Fishes  – This Labyrinth Aquarium sink has the potential to captivate pets and guests alike. Just be extremely careful that you don’t spring a leak.
