Put simply, it’s someone from Indiana. There are tons of rumors on how this word originated but no one can really pin down a single answer.

2. “Why Are You So Obsessed With Fried Food?”

Hoosiers have a quick cooking trick that instantly makes everything taste better: Toss it in the deep fryer and dip it in ranch. Indiana has several festivals throughout the year that seem to revolve around deep-fried dishes, like the Evansville Fall Festival, and nearly every restaurant in the state will have a long list of fried appetizers on the menu.

3. “Where’s Your Accent?”

While some areas of rural Indiana have noticeable accents, a lot of Hoosiers don’t. It’s just a side effect of living in the melting pot that is the “Crossroads of America.”

4. “Isn’t It Just Cornfields?”

Come on… That stereotype is totally inaccurate! Indiana isn’t just filled with cornfields, there are soybean fields, too! In all seriousness, Indiana does have a lot of farmland, but it’s also got big cities, forests, and rolling hills as well.

5. “Are You A Colts Fan?”

Typically, it’s safe to assume that if someone calls Indiana home, they’ll be cheering for the blue and white. There are a few exceptions when you get closer to Chicago or the Ohio border, but for the most part, this state is made up of diehard Colts fans, through and through.

6. “What’s In Sugar Cream Pie?”

Sugar cream pie is really just brown sugar, vanilla, and cream, in additional to the typical pie ingredients like flour, butter, and salt. It’s simple, but it sure is delicious.

7. “Why Do You Always Have Snow Gear In Your Trunk?”

After years of dealing with bipolar weather patterns, every Hoosier has been conditioned to always pack for any potential storm that might hit. When those sunny skies suddenly switch to a downfall of sleet at a moment’s notice, they’ll be thankful they did.

8. “Wait, So Purdue Is An Indiana School?”

Without a state named attached to Purdue University, a lot of people that aren’t from Indiana often mistake this college for an East Coast Ivy League school. Outsiders are shocked to hear that it’s just a state school that is filled with typical college kids.

9. “Notre Dame Is In Indiana Too!?”

Another university in the Hoosier State that’s got a name completely unassociated with Indiana, few Americans realize that this school is in South Bend unless they’re a fan. It’s just another great school that makes the Indiana higher education system stand out worldwide.

Despite being set in the fictional town of Pawnee, Ind., the very popular show “Parks and Recreation” was actually filmed in the Los Angeles area. However, there are special episodes where the gang takes fields trips to Indiana staples like St. Elmo Steak House and the Lucas Oil Stadium.

11. “Have You Been To A Beach?”

Indiana isn’t as landlocked as most people think, bordering Lake Michigan in its northwest corner and all of the coastlines that come along with it. It’s not an ocean, but it’s still possible to dip your toes in the sand without leaving the state.

12. “What’s The Big Deal With The Indy 500?”

While the Indy 500 is really just a bunch of cars going around an oval track 200 times, it’s so much more than that to Hoosiers. First, they hits speeds of over 200 miles per hour! Second, it’s really just an excuse to throw a huge multi-day celebration with several hundred thousand people. It’s one of those events that you really just have to check out for yourself to fully understand.

13. “Isn’t That Where Michael Jackson Was From?”

Perhaps the most famous person to ever come out of the Hoosier State, Michael Jackson hails from Gary, Ind. Famous for songs like “Thriller” and “Beat It,” most Hoosiers have a special place in the heart for the King of Pop, despite the controversies that now surround his name.

14. “What Are Those Giant Sandwiches Called?”

It’s a pork tenderloin and it’s delicious. Perhaps Indiana’s most famous dish, these sandwiches feature a thinly sliced piece of pork that’s breaded and deep-fried before being topped with pickle, mustard, and onions and placed on a hamburger bun.

If you’re talking to an Indiana Hoosier fan, they’ll fondly recall the days when Bobby Knight coached the team, leading the squad to multiple championships. Of course, the Hoosiers have played a lot of good seasons since he left. They might not have their sixth banner hanging yet, but fans remain hopeful every year.

16. “Do You Even Have Neighbors?”

Believe it or not, Indiana isn’t just a vast farmland with tiny houses spread around the countryside. While some of the state is like that, most people live in the larger cities and towns. Heck, the Indianapolis metro area has close to 2 million residents.

17. “How Do You Play Euchre?”

18. “There’s Actually A Town Called Santa Claus?”

There is! And the story behind how it got the name is actually pretty interesting. Originally, the town applied for a post office in 1856 under the name “Santa Fe.” This name was declined and the town was forced to pick something else. Long story short, they somehow ended up settling on Santa Claus, which is fitting because the town is now home to the nationally recognized theme park, Holiday World.

19. “Does Everyone Own A Gun?”

It’s not rare to hear gunshots fired off in the distance across rural Indiana. The Hoosier State is full of gun owners and people that actually prefer to hunt for their own food over buying it at the store. Of course, once you’ve tasted venison, you’ll completely understand why this hobby is such popular around the area.

20. “Why Can’t You Buy Alcohol On Sundays?

Indiana is still one of only a few states that doesn’t allow alcohol sales on Sunday. This law is leftover from a long time ago and at this point the economic impact of changing it would have mixed results making it difficult to push any changes through.
