Husker football is the way of life in Nebraska. It’s just as pervasive throughout town as the fans are when there’s a home game.
Husker football is also known for its emphasis on Nebraska roots, any old kid off the farm with a good arm can try out for the team, and in the ’80s and ’90s, it seemed like every Nebraskan was a secret football star.
2. Lincolnians Want You To Know That Their City Is Way More Than Corn
The stereotype from the two coasts is that Nebraska is all corn, but that’s just not true. Lincoln is also home to gorgeous prairies, with big blue sky views for miles. The Prairie Preserve, the cranes landing in the Sandhills and the miles upon miles of easy bike trails make communing with Midwest nature irresistible to folks here.
3. Family Is Always Number One In Lincoln
That Midwestern stereotype about how everyone is really friendly and really wants to know the answer to “How’s your day going?” could have originated in Nebraska. It’s universally agreed that everyone is friendly, and everyone is really focused on creating a great community for the young ones (we’ll get into a little more detail shortly). That’s because in this city family always comes first.
4. The Seasons Make Lincolnians As Hardy As Their Frontier Ancestors
In a world where the the inch of snow from last night melts in 90 degree heat, the people are going to be ready for anything, and have a skin thick enough to handle it. The original frontiersman who decided not to go all the way to Oregon were the toughest of the lot, being able to handle Nebraska’s fierce every-season.
5. But They Still Count Down The Days Until Glorious Summer Arrives
And we’re not just talking about the weather, although the steady heat is always nice. There are festivals abound in the immediate metropolitan area.
Prime examples: the Nebraska City Jazz Festival is always a great way to unwind. RibFest is the best way to pack it all in. The Haymarket Farmer’s Market is the best way to kickstart an awesome weekend. Oh, you’re very welcome.
6. Lincolnians Are Smart—And Have The Swanky University To Prove It
University of Nebraska-Lincoln is basically the Harvard of Nebraska. It’s the biggest by far and has the widest variety of programs to offer young minds looking for an affordable, top tier education. Consistently ranked among the best on US News & World Report, UNL is a huge source of pride for the city.

7. Football Isn’t The Only Game In Town For Folks In Lincoln
Those apathetic about the Huskers no need to fret (too much, I mean, don’t go around spouting that), because the awesome sports teams in the city are hardly limited. You have the Kansas City farm team, the stellar Saltdogs, and the UNL basketball team made it to the NCAA tournament last year. So yeah, Lincolnians spread the sports love all around.
8. Everyone In Lincoln Is Pumped For The Burgeoning Downtown
Between the new arena that’s got the whole city abuzz and the solid stretches of delicious food—Brazilian, Indian and other overseas snacks will keep you coming back as much as the legendary Zoo Bar’s live sets will—it’s hard to find a reason not to hit the Haymarket every weekend.
It’s like a smaller, more walkable version of Omaha, without the hour drive.
9. Lincoln Is An Awesome Place To Be A Kid
Kids have it made in the shade in Lincoln. While they may not appreciate the Haymarket as much until they’re older, there’s plenty to do in the meantime.
The Lincoln Children’s Museum is the way all kids should learn, period. The Lincoln Zoo is held in higher esteem than ones in say, San Diego. And if even if you’re tired of these recommended mainstays, there’s a park around the corner from anywhere where you and yours can while away another day in Lincoln.
10. Lincolnians Are Proud Of Their National Standing
You want to know who thinks Lincoln is a great place to live? Everyone who lives here or at least that‘s what Gallup tells us. So does Forbes. And who is going to argue with them, not Lincolnians, they are too busy enjoying their lives. And if you lived here, you would be, too.
