However you want to say it, one thing is clear: It’s time to get excited, because we’ve created the map of all maps, the Kryptonite to any studied cartographer; the Jane to any Thor; and the absolute self-absorption to Iron Man.
In short, this map will be the downfall of all others that have come before or will come after it (as foretold in the Book of Oa, of course).
That’s because this map of the most popular superheroes in each state was created with science, so you know it’s definitive.
But just like the fact that Lois Lane miraculously survives a Kryptonian laser blast in Man of Steel, we think this all needs some extra explanation. So let’s take a closer look at how we created this map.
How We Made These Maps
Just as we mentioned above, we used the magic of science (which, as Thor would tell you, are one in the same), to create this awesome map.
Basically, we researched the number of Facebook users in each state who have Liked each of the most popular superheroes. That elite list includes:
After that, we put the data into a spreadsheet, did some number crunching, and BAM! we came up with this map. But why did we do it? It is our gift. It is our curse. Who are we? We’re the Movoto Real Estate Blog, and we like to make awesome stuff like this. Oh, and we sell houses too.
But more on that later. First, let’s take a look at each of these 10 superheroes and where in the U.S. they were most Liked, starting with the most popular of them all, Green Lantern.
No, we’re just messing with you. It’s Batman, of course.
1. Batman
Out of the millions of Batman fans, the three states that had the very most of them—i.e., the highest percentage of their populations Liked Batman—were Utah with 3.11 percent, Nevada with 2.96 percent, and New Mexico with 2.82 percent. Holy Facebook Likes, Batman. That’s a lot.
2. Iron Man
Well, at least he was close to No. 1 in a few states where he had a high percentage of Likes. In Utah, Alaska, and Nevada the genius playboy billionaire philanthropist was Liked by 2.61, 2.51, and 2.07 percent of the populations, respectively.
3. Superman
Where Superman was at least marginally more popular, though, was Utah, Nevada, and Alaska, with 1.66, 1.63, and 1.61 percent of their populations Liking Superman.
If your super-senses are detecting a pattern here, you’re right. It seems as though Utah, Nevada, Alaska, and New Mexico are just super into superheroes; they’re going to pop up more times than Lois Lane rebuffs Clark Kent, all the while pining for…Clark Kent.
4. Spider-Man
But he was at least more popular in some states than not: In Nevada he had 1.11 percent of the population’s Likes, in New York, 1.03, and in New Mexico, .97.
5. Thor
In Nebraska, for example, 1.10 percent of the population Liked Thor. In Utah, 1.09 percent Liked him, and in Alaska, 1.07 percent.
On the other end of the spectrum, just .42 percent of folks in Mississippi Liked Thor. Sounds like it’s time to bring the thunder.
6. Hulk
Hulk was more popular in Nevada, Arizona, and Alaska than in other states, and he was least Liked in the South, in Mississippi and Louisiana. I guess he just doesn’t fit well with Southern hospitality.
7. Captain America
Out of all the states, though, the ones where he was more Liked were Utah, Nevada, New York, Arizona, and California; and the ones where he was least appreciated were Mississippi, Alabama, and Minnesota, where clearly they just hate America. (That’s totally sarcasm).
8. Wolverine
In Michigan, for example, he ripped it up, with 1.23 percent of the population Liking him (maybe a certain school might want to ask him to be their mascot?). He was also pretty popular in Ohio, with .31 percent and Arkansas, with .21 percent.
Maybe it’s because he’s Canadian?
9. Wonder Woman
In Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Texas, and Arizona, though, she was more Liked than in other states, ranging from .56 percent of the population to .50 percent.
On the other end of the spectrum, just .27 percent of New Hampshire residents Liked Wonder Woman. At least she’s not as bad off as Green Lantern.
Speaking of which…
10. Green Lantern
If you’re looking for the worst things that can be said about Green Lantern, well, just look at the reviews of his last movie.
There were some states that Liked this superhero, at least a little, though. In Indiana, for example, .31 percent of residents Liked him on Facebook. This was closely followed by Alaska and Nevada where .27 percent of residents Liked him.
He may not be Batman, but hey, at least he’s no Plastic Man.
