From frat houses and flats to sororities and studios, there are a ton of options when it comes to college housing. But is there a major difference between on-campus and off-campus pricing? Is that closet sized dorm really worth it in terms of location and price per square foot?
We gathered on-campus and off-campus data for over 1,500 colleges to find out which schools had the highest on-campus housing cost in comparison to off-campus housing in the same area.
Based on local apartment listings, university housing data, and an average dorm room size of 300 square feet, we were able to determine an average monthly cost (per square foot) for each school’s on-campus and off-campus housing options.

You’re Probably Paying Too Much For College Housing
Our data suggests that in almost every case, off campus housing costs less per square foot, usually by a large margin. In fact, 99% of schools had a higher on-campus cost per square foot. Looking at this graphic, you can see exactly how much more on-campus housing is for the 25 schools mentioned.
Obviously this doesn’t take into account the different amenities on-campus housing provides, in addition to the fact most activities take place on-campus. Nonetheless, the difference in cost is certainly an interesting issue to look at…
