New Orleans is Louisiana’s “Big Easy”, a vibrant, culturally and historically rich city that’s home to around 370,000 people in the city itself, and 1.1 million in the metro area. New Orleans has some wonderful neighborhoods including the popular French Quarter, and the city as a whole has a Walk Score of 56 meaning that some errands are accomplishable on foot.
The French Quarter
Not only is the French Quarter the best known neighborhood in New Orleans, it is the best to live in according to Walk Score. They give the French Quarter a Walk Score of 94, which means you can do all your daily errands without the use of a car here. Of course that’s if you don’t mind being surrounded by tourists! The fabulous location means that the cost of living is higher in this New Orleans’ neighborhood with housing costing 142 percent more than the city average. But you do get access to countless excellent restaurants, bars, coffee shops and entertainment, and you’re close to the central business district too. You can visit well known landmarks like Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, and the Mississippi River, and if you think this would be a bad area for crime, think again – the French Quarter crime index is actually 59 percent lower than the New Orleans average!
Central Business District
The heart of the modern city of New Orleans, the Central Business District is adjacent to the French Quarter and is also a great place to live. If you don’t have a car you can do everything on foot here according to Walk Score who give the CBD a score of 91, and that includes having access to grocery stores, shopping, restaurants, schools, and entertainment. You can go and watch the New Orleans Saints playing at the Superdome, or catch a concert there. The cost of living isn’t quite so high as the French Quarter but still 25 percent above the New Orleans average, and, crime levels are 59 percent lower than the city average too.
Marigny
The Marigny neighborhood is to the north east of the French Quarter with a shore along the Mississippi River. Officially named Fauborg Marigny, but being referred to as The Marigny more recently, this is more a residential neighborhood that has Washington Square at its heart. There are still places to eat and drink, and several schools in the neighborhood too. Grocery stores, access to transit, and proximity to the French Quarter makes this a desirable place to live, and it’s a little more affordable than the French Quarter and CBD. Marigny has a Walk Score of 89.
Iberville
Known as the Iberville Projects this neighborhood is a housing project that was built in the area once known as Storyville, just north of the French Quarter. The homes here were built in the 1940s after the majority of buildings in Storyville were declared unsafe. As far as cost of living goes Iberville cannot be beat for its central location. The cost of living here is 26 percent below the New Orleans average, however, crime rates are 59 percent higher than the city average. Iberville has a Walk Score of 87 and there are grocery stores, schools and transit right on the doorstep.
Uptown
Uptown is a neighborhood in the Uptown/Carrollton area of New Orleans, west of the French Quarter, and not to be confused with the larger Uptown section of New Orleans which is now a Historic District. Uptown has a Walk Score of 85 so most errands can be accomplished on foot, and there’s everything you need close by including grocery stores, shops, schools, restaurants and more. Uptown is safer than 80 percent of the neighborhoods in New Orleans so it’s a relatively safe place to live, and for families the schools perform above the city average.
