Because they’re Maryland Blue Crabs and they’re the best crabs you’ll find this side of Alaska. Ask anyone.

2. “Why Is There Old Bay On Everything?”

A man and Old Bay Seasoning

Because Old Bay makes everything better and it’s not just for crabs. You know your grandmom’s meatloaf that has a consistency not unlike a hockey puck? Sprinkle a little Old Bay on it. Boom! Highly edible.

3. “What’s The Difference Between Old Bay Seasoning And Chesapeake Bay Seasoning?”

Old Bay Seasoning

To seasoning purists, everything is different. They’ll swear that Chesapeake Bay Seasoning is infinitely better than Old Bay. It’s like the seasoning version of Pepsi vs. Coke.

Speaking of sports! You’ll find a lot of Ravens fans throughout Maryland. But you’ll also find some Redskins fans. And a fair share of Steelers fans, too. It’s a melting pot of football fans, mainly thanks to all that old Colts drama.

5. “What About The Colts?”

Did I mention the Colts? I’m sorry. Let’s pretend this never happened.

6. “Are You An Orioles Fan?”

Now when it comes to baseball, everyone is an Orioles fan. If you’re ever looking to camouflage yourself during the spring through late summer months, all you have to do is put on some orange and black and no one will ever find you.

7. “Since When Are Snowballs Rainbow Colored?”

Snowcones

Up north they call it water ice, other places call them Italian ices or snow cones. But snowballs are a Maryland thing and the thing that makes them better than the competition is the creamy texture, almost like ice cream but lighter and fruitier.

Almost everyone who has grown up in Maryland has played lacrosse at one time or another. Jousting is the official state sport of Maryland but lacrosse is the official team sport for the state. Whether you’re at a match or on the beach or in your friend’s garage, you’ll find lacrosse sticks everywhere.

9. “Who Knew Maryland Had Such Awesome Beaches?”

It most certainly is. You can get Thrasher’s fries on the OCMD boardwalk with or without vinegar but whichever way you prefer them, you’ll undoubtedly join the ranks of all the locals who have proclaimed them the best fries on Earth.

11. “Is Maryland A Northern State Or A Southern State?”

While states in the Deep South will staunchly disagree, Maryland is very much a Southern state. They fall below the Mason-Dixon line and the very high majority takes pride in their Southern roots and heritage. Baltimore is the notable exception, which is a city similar to D.C. and Philly.

12. “What Is That Crazy Looking Flag And Why Do I See It Everywhere?”

The Maryland flag

That’s the Maryland flag and it’s, by far, the best flag in the entire Union. You’ll see it throughout the state on everything from the obvious to the most random things including bathing suits, towels, bumper stickers, and more.

13. “What County Are You From?”

Forget towns, cities, or even neighborhoods. When you meet someone from Maryland, they will inevitably ask what county you’re from because that will say everything they need to know about you.

14. “Do You Live In Baltimore?”

Well, Baltimore has a population reaching over 600,000 people. So, the answer could very well be yes. But Maryland is much bigger than Baltimore. So, not only is the answer probably no, but you’ll also probably end up with an eye roll since most Marylanders prefer not to be associated with Baltimore unless it’s sports related.

var googletag = googletag || {};
googletag.cmd = googletag.cmd || [];

15. “Why Does Everyone Yell ‘O’ Really Loud In The National Anthem?”

Source: Maryland Facebook

You’ll mostly hear it at “O”rioles games during the National Anthem. It’s mostly a Baltimore thing but you’ll hear it all throughout the state, too. A lot of people do it and a lot of people hate that people do it. Either way, you’ll definitely hear it.

16. “What’s All This The Eastern Shore Talk?”

The Eastern Shore is basically a bunch of counties that fall predominantly on the Chesapeake Bay side of the state. They have their own thing going on and might as well be separate from most of Maryland, especially Baltimore. You’ll probably hear talk about them trying to secede from time to time. It goes away as quickly as it gets brought up.

17. “Were You In The Navy Or Something?”

Maybe, maybe not. But there is a huge Navy presence and a lot of Navy supporters throughout Maryland, which makes sense since the capital is Annapolis, after all.

18. “Are Those Actual Ponies Roaming The Beaches?”

Horses on a beach

Source: Maryland Facebook

Yep. Genuine feral ponies roam Assateague Island. Chincoteague and more of Assateague is located in Virginia, too. You can camp or roam the beaches, hanging out with the ponies which are safe to be around. But remember, they are feral. So don’t do anything stupid like trying to get a selfie with one or leaving your sandwich hanging out. They’re not shy.

21. “What’s A Boardwalk?”

Ocean City, Maryland has a killer boardwalk that is unlike most others you’ll find because of how much there is to do on it. It’s like visiting Jersey Shore beaches with the added perk of not having to visit Jersey.

22. “Why Does Everyone Keep Calling It Miniature America?”

Source: Maryland Facebook

Just kidding. No one asks that because the answer is obvious. From the mountains to the prairies to the oceans white with foam, Maryland has the best of everything America has to offer. That’s why it’s hard to argue that Maryland is one of the most enjoyable places to live in the country.
