Reviews for Johnson Elementary School

April 02, 2015

It's sad to see the review below because the college student was reviewed poorly by the teacher because of her lack of attendance and commitment to her practicum, and shortly after, wrote the bad review of our school. I guess as some type of angry payback. Johnson Elementary is full of amazing students and dedicated staff. Staff who care deeply about the students and go above and beyond for them. You can feel the loving environment and sense of community when you walk through the door. I've never worked at a school like this before, and I plan on spending many years teaching at this outstanding school. Read Full Review

I'm really sorry to have to write a review like this but it's for the children so I have to. I'm a college student majoring in elementary education; I worked with a third grade class last semester and it was like a prison for these kids. There's a reason this school's test scores are so low and it's not the children (who are wonderful I might add). I don't want to speak of all the staff but some of them, especially the teacher I worked with, are extremely disrespectful to the students. For example, I attempted to approach a teacher about a student who was suffering from a very rough home life and she completely disregarded my concern saying "he's (the student) just crazy." Later I learned that the child's family had left the state in an attempt to flee DHS. The students were never allowed to talk, not even to ask me a question or they'd suffer the consequences. If they were not standing up straight by the door when asking to use the restroom they were unable to go... etc etc. Johnson Elementary needs serious reform! I will never work in this school nor would I ever send my children to this school. Good luck everyone.Read Full Review

My kids LOVE Johnson! Johnson offers before and after school enrichments all year long! There is not another school in the district that does this! Kids can participate in chess club, digital photography, sculpture, painting, lego league, dance, music lessons, writing, drama - all this from at an elementary school. Johnson also provides this to some of the poorest kids in the district! These kids are exposed to opportunities they would not otherwise have if they attended another school. The teachers work hard to have their students make remarkable growth, that is often not seen on a standardized test. Read Full Review

My family moved into Cedar Rapids and the Johnson School area last summer. We were concerned that the local schools wouldn't be able to help our son with special needs. We couldn't have been more wrong. The school bent over backwards to provide a program for our son that has been consistently implemented all year long. We've been thrilled with our sons progress. Johnson is a magnet school for the arts, and its very neat to see what our son can produce, but theres a strong focus on the fundamentals as well. We are very happy with Johnson!Read Full Review

The teachers at Johnson are wonderful. My son's teacher actually asked if we minded her spending extra time with him, because she felt he was bored with the first grade curriculum and she wanted to work on more advanced things with him! We have nothing but good to say about Johnson - the teachers are committed to actually teaching, not just training kids to pass a test. If we were to move out of the district we'd open enroll to keep our kids there.Read Full Review

Very good school for incorporating the arts into every day learning. A very well diversitfied school with very caring teachers and staff. Dispite the fact that majority of the students are in the low income bracket that doesn't reflect or impact on this schools quality.Read Full Review
