What’s it like to live in San Francisco?
Considered by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world, San Francisco is a historical American city that could be compared to the New York City of the West Coast. While it doesn’t have as many skyscrapers as Manhattan or the sheer size of population, the numerous bridges spanning the Bay, the fog that rolls in on a daily basis and the Northern California micro-climate make San Francisco one of the more unique cities in the world. The main city itself spans a peninsula and as long as you don’t mind negotiating a few very steep hills in the middle of it, it is relatively easy to walk over the course of a day. There are numerous different districts to visit, from Chinatown to Haight-Ashbury to the Embarcadero, all of which have their own unique histories, subcultures and offer numerous different things to do.
What are some things to do in San Francisco?
How much time do you have? Even locals who have lived in San Francisco for decades are discovering new things about their own city. For the newcomers, start big and then discover the cultural subtleties as you blend in with your fellow San Franciscans. Grab a romantic Italian dinner in North Beach and catch a baseball game at the magnificent Pac Bell Park, home of the multi-World Series Champions San Francisco Giants. Shop and hit some dive bars in Haight-Ashbury or spend a day wandering through Golden Gate Park, from the Science or De Young Museum to the Botanical Gardens to the Polo Fields, ending at the beach along the Pacific. Grab great Asian food in Chinatown or explore the newly revived areas of Dogpatch, thanks to the tech industry moving their offices into the areas. That alone will fill a weekend and you’ll have barely scratched the surface.
Why you’ll love it here
If a city could be a mosaic of everything fascinating about the West Coast of America, San Francisco would be it. The landscape is literally shifting beneath your feet and offers beauty in everything from its views to its foliage pretty much no matter where you look. The climate is never too hot nor too cold and that allows the city to keep on humming, almost year-round. With the long history from the days of the California Gold Rush that helped build San Francisco to the modern tech revolution that has made it one of the most important cities in the world today, there’s a sense that the city by the Bay is a special place to be when you live there and you wouldn’t rather be anywhere else.
