The 5 Safest Neighborhoods in San Francisco

One of the most important aspects of finding a home is safety. Below is a list of the five safest neighborhoods in San Francisco. To create our list, Movoto Real Estate researched crime statistics across all neighborhoods in San Francisco. We looked at the total number of crimes in each neighborhood, which includes violent crimes and properties crimes. To normalize the data, allowing for a more accurate comparison, the information is presented as crimes per 100,000 residents.

5. Inner Richmond

One of five neighborhoods that make up the Richmond District, the Inner Richmond is safer than 85.3 percent of San Francisco neighborhoods. The area, bounded by California Street to the north, Arguello Boulevard to the east, Fulton Street to the south, and Park Presidio Boulevard to the west, has an estimated 1,878 total crimes annually per 100,000 residents. There are 264 violent crimes and 1,615 property crimes annually.

4. Inner Sunset

One of four smaller neighborhoods that make up The Sunset District, the Inner Sunset neighborhood is safer than 88.2 percent of neighborhoods in San Francisco. The Inner Sunset’s crime rate is 59 percent lower than the San Francisco average. There are an estimated 264 violent crimes and 1,615 property crimes annually per 100,000 residents.

3. North Beach

North Beach is safer than 91.2 percent of San Francisco neighborhoods. Residents of North Beach, located near Chinatown, Fisherman’s Wharf and Russian Hill, have a 1 in 380 chance of being the victim of a violent crime. Additionally, those who live in the area have a 1 in 62 chance of being the victim of a property crime.

The Marina is safer than 94.1 percent of neighborhoods in San Francisco. Residents in the area have a 1 in 54 chance of being a victim of crime. There are 264 violent crimes per 100,00 residents in the area. There are an estimated 1,615 property crimes per 100,000 residents annually in the neighborhood compared to San Francisco’s 4,696.

Nob Hill, centered on the intersection of California Street and and Powell Street, is safer than 97.1 percent of San Francisco neighborhoods. The neighborhood has an estimated 264 violent crimes and 1,615 property crimes per 100,000 residents annually. On average, San Francisco has 660 violent crimes and 4,037 property crimes per 100,000 residents annually. This makes Nob Hill’s crime index 59 percent lower than San Francisco’s crime index.
