The county seat of Orange County since 1889, and the largest city in the county in population, Santa Ana was incorporated as a city in 1886. An important claim to fame might be that Santa Ana is the birthplace of the electric guitar. The Rickenbacker musical instrument company invented the first electric guitar during the 1930s at his headquarters in Santa Ana where it continues to manufacture all of its guitars making it the largest guitar company to manufacture all of its guitars in the United States. The city is also the home of the original Glenn L. Martin aviation company, which later merged with the Lockheed Corporation to form Lockheed Martin, the world?s largest aircraft and weapons manufacturing corporation.

The city has a total area of approximately 27.4 miles. As of the of 2000 census, the total population was 337,977 people The city is accessible over three freeways, the Santa Ana Freeway (Interstate 5) passes through it, and the Costa and Garden Grove Freeways run alongside it. The area is also served by Amtrak passenger rail service, the Greyhound Bus line and the John Wayne (formerly Orange County) Airport. Commuters can utilize public transportation offered by Metrolink?s Orange County Line (Oceanside to Union Station), and Inland Empire-Orange County Line (San Bernardino to San Juan Capistrano). Santa Ana?s large population is served by thirty-seven K-5 elementary schools, nine 6-8 intermediate schools, eight 9-12 high schools, five special schools, one charter school and four K-8 Catholic schools. There is also a community college and a special High School of the Arts located in the downtown district.
