The 5 Safest Neighborhoods in Portland
Oregon’s largest city is known for its liberal attitudes, roses, and green living, awarding it several different nicknames and an unofficial “Keep Portland Weird” slogan. In 2009 Forbes magazine rated Portland the third safest city in America, and according to statistics the murder rate is lower than the national average. So Portland looks to be a good place to live! We compared violent crime and property crime rates across Portland’s neighborhoods and compiled a top five list. So, if you want a really safe community, read on to find out which are the five safest neighborhoods in Portland.
5. Far Southwest
Tucked right into the corner of the farthest south-west limits of Portland, the Far Southwest neighborhood is the 5th safest in the city. The neighborhood is bordered by the I-5 in the west, SW Pasadena Street and SW Pomona Street in the north, and SW 49th Street in the east. The crime rates here are 60 percent below the city average.
Also in the southwest of Portland is the neighborhood of Bridlemile, located in the West Hills. The city boundary runs through this neighborhood, so some homes are within Portland proper, while others are in Multnomah County. Bridlemile’s crime index is 2,241 per 100,000 residents compared to the Portland average of 5,603 per 100,000 residents. It’s the 4th safest neighborhood in Portland, safer than 93 percent of all the neighborhoods in the city.
Portland’s Center neighborhood is also known as North Tabor. At its heart is the Providence Portland Medical Center, the largest employer in the neighborhood. Center is the 3rd safest neighborhood in Portland, scoring well for having a violent crime index that is 60 percent lower than the city average. So Center is safer than nearly 95 percent of neighborhoods in Portland.
Linnton is in the northwest of Portland and has a more rural feel than the other neighborhoods in our top 5. It’s sandwiched between the Willamette River and Forest Park, along U.S. Route 30, so residents get to enjoy easy access into this beautiful park. Linnton is safer than over 96 percent of neighborhoods in the city, making this the 2nd safest neighborhood in Portland.
1. Corbett-Terwilliger-Lair Hill
Still referred to as Corbett-Terwilliger-Lair Hill on many maps, this neighborhood is now officially named South Portland, after a name change was agreed in 2006. Set just a little way south of downtown, South Portland is the No. 1 safest neighborhood in Portland. You have just a 1 in 486 chance of being the victim of violent crime in this neighborhood, and overall a 1 in 45 chance of being the victim of any crime.
