Oregon’s largest city is known for its liberal attitudes, roses, and green living, awarding it several different nicknames and an unofficial “Keep Portland Weird” slogan. In 2009 Forbes magazine rated Portland the third safest city in America, and according to statistics the murder rate is lower than the national average. So Portland looks to be a good place to live! We compared violent crime and property crime rates across Portland’s neighborhoods and compiled a top five list. So, if you want a really safe community, read on to find out which are the five safest neighborhoods in Portland.
Tucked right into the corner of the farthest south-west limits of Portland, the Far Southwest neighborhood is the 5th safest in the city. The neighborhood is bordered by the I-5 in the west, SW Pasadena Street and SW Pomona Street in the north, and SW 49th Street in the east. The crime rates here are 60 percent below the city average.
Also in the southwest of Portland is the neighborhood of Bridlemile, located in the West Hills. It’s the 4th safest neighborhood in Portland, safer than 93 percent of all the neighborhoods in the city.
Portland’s Center neighborhood is also known as North Tabor. At its heart is the Providence Portland Medical Center, the largest employer in the neighborhood. Center is the 3rd safest neighborhood in Portland, scoring well for having a violent crime index that is 60 percent lower than the city average. So Center is safer than nearly 95 percent of neighborhoods in Portland.
Linnton is in the northwest of Portland and has a more rural feel than the other neighborhoods in our top 5. It’s sandwiched between the Willamette River and Forest Park, along U.S. Route 30, so residents get to enjoy easy access into this beautiful park.
