San Diego is the second-most populous city in California, located at the southern end of the state. It was founded in 1769 when the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola established a military post in the region called the Presidio of San Diego. It is a geographically diverse region with canyons, mesas, a bay, and mountainous areas. San Diego borders Tijuana, Mexico to the South, and Orange County to the North. San Diego is home to educational institutions such as the University of California, San Diego, in addition to many military institutions spanning different branches. The region has a strong economy with jobs in computers, electronics, biotechnology, manufacturing, and defense. Additionally, the region is a thriving tourist destination which attracts visitors from around the world. According to census data from the year 2000, San Diego had a population of 1,223,400. The median household income was $45,733. San Diego has a vibrant culture with many attractions such as museums, restaurants, and theaters. The San Diego Museum of Art and the San Diego Museum of Man can be found in Balboa Park, a popular destination within the city. The San Diego Symphony and San Diego Opera are both renowned for their excellence. San Diego is home to several well-known sports franchises as well, such as the San Diego Padres baseball team and the San Diego Chargers football team. The San Diego Unified School District administers over 100 elementary schools, 23 middle schools, and 27 high schools. Many are very well ranked, with over two-dozen schools earning scores over 900 on California's API scale.
