Milpitas City Description

At the "Crossroads of Silicon Valley", the grassy knolls of Milpitas on the southeastern end of the San Francisco bay have served as home to the Ohlone Indians, a resting spot for Spanish padres on their travels between missions and the Mexican Rancho Milpitas meaning little cornfields from which the town, incorporated in 1954 acquired its name. In the 1850's settlers of English, Irish and German descent traveled west to Milpitas to farm the fertile hills and valleys, they were followed in the 1870's by Portuguese immigrant sharecroppers from the Azores Islands. Like much of the Bay Area, a second wave of settlers came after World War II to work in the then, fledgling technical industry. The first housing developments were built here in the 1950's and 1960's to house this new wave of settlers. Newer developments of single family homes and condominiums were built through the 1990's providing housing for local workers including those from major area employers like of Maxtor, Palm One, LSI Logic, Solectron and Adaptec who have their headquarters here and Quantum, Cisco Systems, KLA Tencor, Seagate, LifeScan, and Veritas with offices in Milpitas. Another major, local employer, the 1.3 million square foot, Great Mall in Milpitas is one of Northern California's largest retail and entertainment centers with 11 major retail anchor stores, more than 200 smaller shops consisting of manufacturer outlets, discount and specialty stores, a multiplex theater, seven full-service restaurants and an international food court.

Although much of the rich farmland which gave Milpitas its name and most of its heritage has given way to industrial parks, shopping centers and housing developments, the area has preserved its rural character through it's 22 parks including 1,539 acre, Ed R. Levin County Park, which combines the best features of an urban and wilderness park with picnic, fishing and play areas, Sandy Wool Lake, a complex trail system and expansive lawns. Spectacular views of the Silicon Valley and San Francisco Bay can be enjoyed from the park's Monument Peak. The Spring Valley area at southern portion of the park features an 18-hole golf course, pond and pioneer cemetery used from 1863 to 1912.

64,998 residents live within the 14.5-square-miles of Milpitas, earning a median household income of $98,979 yearly. There were 490 sales of single family homes in 2005 with a median sales price of $706,000. Milpitas is well connected to the rest of the Bay Area by its transportation system which includes the VTA (Valley Transportation Authority) a light rail, high-speed transit system, local buses, several major surface streets and highways, #237, 680 and 880. All of the Milpitas School District's 9 public elementary schools (K-6) had API (Academic Performance Indicator) scores of 700 or higher in 2005 with 5 scoring over 800. The city's 2 public middle schools (7-8) were designated as California Distinguished Schools and Milpitas Community Day School one of the City's two children's centers (ages 2-1/2 to first grade) was one of only 2 out of 365 community day schools across the state to be honored with the California Best Program Award.  There are also 3 private elementary schools (K-8), an adult education center and 3 community colleges serving the area.
