Brentwood is located in California's East Bay and was initially developed in the 1870s. The first businesses in Brentwood, a blacksmith and a mercantile, were opened in 1874. Brentwood is accessible via Interstate 580 and Highway 4. Brentwood is renowned for its prime farmland and "U-pick" opportunities. Brentwood's Agricultural Land Trust is committed to preservation efforts, whereby developers are given the rights to build new housing in the urban areas in exchange for preserving the city's valuable farmland. Brentwood has been hosting an event called "Cornfest" each year, which is a food festival that features Brentwood's famous sweet corn. Brentwood's population during the 2000 census was 29,302. The estimated median household income in 2005 was $84,722.
