When it comes to crime and safety Miami is usually rated among the worst cities in the nation, showing especially high rates for violent crimes. But, like any other city, there are good and bad neighborhoods. Movoto Real Estate has compiled a list of the five safest neighborhoods in Miami by comparing the total number of crimes, including violent crimes and property crimes. The results are in, presented as crimes per 100,000 residents for accurate comparison.
Named for the historic Coral Way road that was founded in the 1920s, the Coral Way neighborhood has beautiful features and historic homes, and it’s the fifth safest neighborhood in Miami. Safer than 64.3 percent of the neighborhoods in Miami, the crime index is 13 percent lower than the city average. Each year there’s an average of 1,041 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, and 4,921 property crimes per 100,000 residents.
Miami’s Upper Eastside is north of Edgewater, east of Little Haiti, and south of Miami Shores, and includes the subdivisions of Magnolia Park, Bay Point, Morningside, Bayside, Belle Meade, Shorecrest, and Palm Grove. Upper Eastside is the fourth safest neighborhood in Miami, safer than 71.4 percent of the neighborhoods in the city. Violent crimes and property crimes are both 24 percent lower than the Miami average, at 904 and 4,271 per 100,000 residents, respectively.
Coconut Grove is the oldest modern continuously-inhabited neighborhood of Miami, and today it’s split into North and South Coconut Grove. North Coconut Grove comes out as the third safest neighborhood in Miami with a crime index that is 59 percent lower than the city average. Just 479 violent crimes per 100,000 residents are reported on average each year, and 2,264 property crimes per 100,000 residents. This all makes North Coconut Grove safer than 78.6 percent of the neighborhoods in Miami.
If you thought the stats for North Coconut Grove looked good, South Coconut Grove is even better! The figures are actually very similar between these two neighborhoods but the southern section is, according to the numbers, safer than 85.7 percent of the neighborhoods in Miami. You have a 1 in 37 chance of being a victim of crime here, compared to the Miami average which is a 1 in 15 chance.
Islands is the No. 1 safest neighborhood in Miami! It is safer than 92.9 percent of the neighborhoods in Miami, and your chances of being the victim of violent crime in Islands is just 1 in 209. While the violent crime rate in Miami as a whole is 1,198 per 100,000, in Islands it’s only 479 per 100,000, and the crime index overall is 59 percent lower than the Miami average.
