When you’re looking for a new home, one of your biggest concerns is probably finding a safe area. Maybe you have a family or you’re just looking to start one. Maybe you just worry for your own personal health. Maybe you want to make sure your home will have a good value down the line. Either way, safety is definitely important.

Well, here at the Movoto Real Estate Blog, we know a thing or two about safe areas (and finding homes). After all, we’ve ranked the safest places in many states before and we do happen to be a real estate company, so it makes sense. Illinois happens to be next on our list, so if you’re looking for security in the Prairie State, this might just point you in the right direction.

The safest place in Illinois were:

1. Village of Homer Glen
2. Village of Buffalo Grove
3. City of Geneva
4. Village of Bartlett
5. Village of Roselle
6. Village of Lisle
7. Village of Glen Ellyn
8. Village of Glenview
9. Village of New Lenox
10. Village of Libertyville

If you’re curious where your hometown ranked, you can check the chart at the bottom of this article to see the top 50 safest spots. And if you’re curious as to how we found these very safe places, you can go to the very next section, where we’ll discuss our methodology.

How We Created This Ranking

As with our other safety-related Big Deal Lists, we first made a list of the most populated places in the state. Then, using the Uniform Crime Report from the FBI (2012) we found data in what we deemed important criteria. If a place did not report their data to the FBI report, then it was omitted from our list. The criteria we looked at were:

  • Murder
  • Rape
  • Robbery
  • Assault
  • Burglary
  • Theft
  • Vehicle theft

We then  divided these crimes into four different categories:

  • Murders
  • Violent crimes
  • Property crimes
  • Total crimes

That gave us a total of 115 locations with reported data. Once we had those numbers, to compare big and small places fairly, we found each of these crime rates based on crimes per 100,000 residents.

We then ranked each place with a score from one to 115 for murders, violent crimes, property crimes, and total crimes, all per 100,000, with one being the safest possible score.

Because most would agree that murders, violent crimes, and property crimes are a little worse than others, we weighted these rankings so that they would be worth 30 percent of the overall score, where the total number of crimes would be worth just 10 percent.

After that we averaged each places weighted scores into one Big Deal Score, and the place with the lowest number for their score became our safest spot.

So, if you’re looking for a safe place to make your home, these places were the supremely safest. Why exactly? Let’s take an in-depth look at why each place earned a spot in the top 10.

1. Homer Glen

If you’re looking for safety in all areas, it has to be Homer Glen. There’s simply no better option. In fact, if you live here, you only had a one in 127 chance of being the victim of a crime in 2012. If you’re still not sure, the other numbers pretty much speak for themselves.

This place had no murders, no rapes, and four robberies per 100,000 people in 2012. There were 21 assaults, 176 burglaries, 578 thefts, and only eight vehicle thefts per 100,000 that year as well.

That means that this place had merely 787 crimes per 100,000 people reported in 2012. Let that sink in a minute. That is the lowest number of total crimes on our list and the third lowest property crime on our list.

2. Buffalo Grove

This Chicago suburb boasted some pretty impressive numbers across the board. In 2012, this village only saw seven robberies and five assaults per 100,000 people as far as violent crime went.

There were no murders and no rapes, which means this place ranked the second least violent overall.

We should mention that this was one of the larger places in our top 10, at 41,687 people, so folks looking for a little more population might want to give this spot a try. Besides, for a place so big a mere 1 in 110 chance of being the victim of a crime is pretty astounding.

3. Geneva

It was a close race between these top three places, and for good reason. Geneva had a serious lack of any violent crime, with no rapes, murders, robberies, and only nine assaults per 100,000 people in 2012. That made this place the least violent spot in the state.

The reason this place didn’t rank No. 1 overall was that it had a tiny bit more property crime than our No. 1 place, ranking 15th there. Still, only 1,225 crimes of that type per 100,000 is amazingly low, and the total crime was ranked fourth, which lead to locals here having a mere one in 81 chance of being the victim of a crime.

It should be easy for locals to get a good night’s sleep tonight with that in mind.

4. Bartlett

Locals of Bartlett have no reason to worry about the safety of their stuff. Why? Because this place had the fourth lowest property crime on our list with only 764 crimes of that type per 100,000 people. That’s an impressive number, but it doesn’t stop there.

A bigger place at 41,477 people, this village is still safer than many larger and smaller cities, with the fourth lowest total crime and a 1 in 119 chance of being the victim of a crime for locals.

It’s probably also worth mentioning that there were no murders reported here in 2012.

5. Roselle

The safety doesn’t stop in this little village. Home to 22,923 people, Roselle is also home to the 13th lowest violent crime that we looked at.

In fact, this place had no murders, nine rapes, 17 robberies, and 26 assaults per 100,000 people in 2012, which is genuinely a pretty impressive set of numbers.

As far as property crime went, the ranking was No. 23. There were 318 burglaries, 982 thefts, and 35 vehicle thefts per 100,000 people in 2012. Throw in some very low total crime scores, and you get a secure place with locals having only a 1 in 72 chance of being the victim of a crime.

6. Lisle

The low instances of 18 rapes, 22 robberies, 40 assaults, and no murders per 100,000 people reported in Lisle during 2012 certainly speak to this place being pretty secure for its 22,550 locals.

There’s more than that, though. There were merely 1,136 property crimes per 100,000 people reported here in 2012. That was the 10th lowest on our list, and helped this place have the 10th lowest total crime as well.

In the end, people who live in Lisle had only a one in 82 chance of being the victim of a crime during 2012.

7. Glen Ellyn

Although this place had neither the lowest property crime nor the lowest violent crime we looked at, it still did impressively well in terms of both those stats.

Both ranking in the top 25, Glen Ellyn had merely 58 violent crimes and 1,312 property crimes per 100,000 people reported in 2012. You can bet that’s great news for locals.

All in all, this place had the 17th lowest violent crime per 100,000 total in 2012. Not only is that a very safe stat, but it leads to people who live there only having a 1 in 73 chance of being the victim of any sort of crime, and an even lower chance of it being a violent one.

8. Glenview

Another larger locale, this place had some pretty solid stats to back it up. for starters, there were no murders reported here in 2012, and that’s only the first thing for locals to be happy about.

They’ll also probably be pleased to hear that there was a total of merely 1,066 property crimes per 100,000 people, which is the seventh lowest on our list. This place also had the eighth lowest total crime, as 1,153 per 100,000.

All that means that Glenview locals had a mere 1 in 87 chance of being the victim of a crime.

9. New Lenox

This spot may be small at 24,549 people, and it may be a little sleepy and quiet, but that also makes it’s pretty peaceful and safe for locals.

The violent crime here was low in 2012, with no murders, eight rapes, four robberies, and 65 assaults per 100,000 people. That definitely set this place apart from bigger cities.

The village of New Lenox was also all about keeping your property safe. There were just 1,230 property crimes per 100,000, for a total of 1,307 crimes overall per 100,000 in 2012.

That amazingly low number meant that anyone who called New Lenox home would only have had a one in 77 chance of being the victim of crime.

10. Libertyville

Although Libertyville was last on our top 10 list, it’s certainly not last in terms of safety. While the property crime was a little higher here, keeping it out of the top five ranking, the other stats in Libertyville are absolutely deserving of praise.

There were no murders here per 100,000 people in 2012, and only 25 violent crimes per 100,000 people that year. That was good enough to rank as the sixth lowest violent crime, tied with our first place village of Homer Glen.

That also meant that locals had very low chances of being the victim of any sort of crime. How low? Only 1 in 64, and even lower for violent crimes.

Union, Justice, And Safety

When it comes to playing it safe, you might want to pick one of these 10 secure spots as your home field. They certainly have an advantage.

Maybe you’ll see your hometown in the top 50 below, and if you don’t see it there, it’s either been omitted because it didn’t have data or it’s time to pick a new, safer spot to call home.
