If you’ve been to Sacramento, you know that this is one city that wears a lot of hats, and there’s always something exciting going on . You’ll dine at delicious restaurants, you’ll see some of the coolest cars you’ve ever seen, and yes, the area is even a great place to retire. Sometimes, though, all of this isn’t quite enough. You need to think about what’s best for your family—and by family in this case, we’re referring to those of the furry variety. These Are The 10 Most Pet-Friendly Places Near Sacramento

We’re sure that there are certain parts within Sacramento that are barking awesome for pets, but if you really want a place where Fido can stretch his legs, you might want to head to the ‘burbs. These are the 10 most pet friendly places near Sacramento. 1. Loomis
2. Fair Oaks
3. Roseville
4. Davis
5. Wilton
6. Cameron Park
7. Folsom
8. Rocklin
9. Citrus Heights
10. Galt
We came up with this list by looking at all of the places near Sacramento in terms of these pet-friendly amenities:
  • Pet stores per capita
  • Vets per capita
  • Pet services per capita (dog walkers, pet boarding and sitting, pet groomers, and pet training)
  • Parks per capita
From there we did some numbers magic that would make a cockatoo's head spin, which we’ll get back to later on in the post. For now, let’s take a closer look at our 10 winners.

1. Loomis

Key Stats:

  • Pet stores: Two
  • Vets: Eight
  • Pet services: 17
  • Parks: Three
With just under 7,000 residents, Loomis is one of the smaller communities in our top 10, and yet, this place manages to pack in a whole lot when it comes to spoiling your pet. From places like Foothill Feed & Gift to VCA Loomis Basin Veterinary Clinic, Loomis has more pet stores and vets per capita than anywhere else in the area. It also has the second most pet services, complete with Aunt Cynthia’s Bed and Biscuit Inn, which sounds so welcoming, I think I’ll stay there next time I’m in the area.

2. Fair Oaks

Key Stats:

  • Vets: 29
  • Pet services: 24
  • 4 Parks: 13
Okay, not only does Fair Oaks have the third most vets, pet services, and parks per capita, but this place even has a dog walking festival each year and a town center (Old Fair Oaks Village) that is filled year-round with chickens, so you know the neighbors are definitely animal friendly. And say your little one has something of a “ruff” encounter with the chickens (hey, we’ve all been there), not to worry—there are almost 30 vets in this community alone.

3. Roseville

Key Stats:

    Parks: 68
  • Pet stores: 19
If you’re looking for an excellent place to have a dog in particular, Roseville is your spot. First off, there’s actually a business here named Ben’s Bark Ave. Bistro. People love this place, and dogs love, love, love this place, not to mention the nearly 20 other pet stores dotted around town. Then there are the parks. With more per capita than anywhere else in the Sacramento area, your dogs—or exceptionally well-trained cats—will love the nature here.

4. Davis

Key Stats:

    Parks: 19
  • Vets: 37
Davis is probably best known as a great place to send your kids for school (it’s home to UC Davis), but, it’s also a great place for your other kids. Your pet kids. It’s dotted with parks (the sixth most per capita), it’s filled with dog-friendly festivals, dog-friendly restaurants, and of course, dogs themselves. And no matter what kind of pets you have, they’ll be in good hands with more vets per capita than nearly anywhere else outside of Sacramento.

5. Wilton

Key Stats:

  • Pet services 12
  • Pet stores: One
If you’re surprised to see Wilton on our list because of its small size, hold your horses. Sure, it only has one pet store and 12 pet services, but remember, we calculated these per capita. So that’s 13 pet amenities for just over 4,000 residents. That’s pretty dog-on good. Plus, there’s a pet training service in the area called Goin to the Dogs, and any place with a punny name is okay in our book.

6. Cameron Park

Key Stats:

  • Pet services: 13
  • Vets: 16
From Happy Tails Pet Sitting to Classy Clips Pet Grooming, Cameron Park has you covered when it comes to either pampering or training your pet. It also has the fifth most vets per capita, which may not be quite as fun for Scout there, but at least he’ll be healthy.

7. Folsom

Key Stats:

  • Parks: 18
  • Pet services: 30
Here’s another place that’s well suited for all kinds of pets, but dogs in particular will have a field day (literally) with all of the parks in the area. There’s John Kemp Park, the Folsom Dog Park, Livermore Community Park, and you can even take your dog kayaking on Lake Natoma! And if your pampered pooch needs some R and R after a long day out, not to worry, Folsom has you covered with “pet resorts” like Pampered Pet Salon and Boutique and A Perfect Groom.

8. Rocklin

Key Stats:

  • Pet stores: Nine
  • Vets: 22
Rocklin may not have quite the high number of parks per capita as some of our other places, but who needs local parks when you can pack up the pets and take them all to Lake Tahoe for the weekend? Your dogs will love you for it—your cats will probably scratch your eyes out before you even get them in the car. But don’t worry, there are plenty of pet stores and vets per capita here, so you can be sure to load up on catnip or sedatives before you hit the road! Or, you know, just take your cat to Rocklin Road and have him boarded for the night.

9. Citrus Heights

Key Stats:

  • Vets: 34
  • Parks: 18
As if C-bar-C Park wasn’t enough reason to have a dog in Citrus Heights, this city is also packed with over 30 vets, 17 other parks, and even a pretty good number of pet stores and services. And it’s not just a good city for pets of the furry variety. There are stores like Aquarium Depot, for your more slithery and scaley family members, and a place called Kasch’s Kritters which specializes in… well, pretty much everything.

10. Galt

Key Stats:

  • Pet stores: five
  • Parks: five
There is a business in Galt called “John’s Cat Condos.” Do you really need any other reason to move here immediately? Even if you don’t have a cat, with the third most pet stores per capita, you’ll probably wind up getting one. Or, if you’re on Team Canine, you’ll be happy to know that Galt has some of the most parks per capita in the area. They’re all smaller community parks (like Galt Community Park, Roundstone, and Walker just to name a few), but hey, if you really need something a little more natural, a little less manicured, well, just look around you. You are in Northern California, after all.

Our Methodology

Here’s where we’ll explain all that math that might make a lesser creature a little cuckoo. But at Movoto, we’re used to it—we always rely on facts and figures when we create our Big Deal Lists, not our own opinions. In this case, we looked at all of the places outside of Sacramento in terms of these pet friendly criteria:
  • Pet stores per capita
  • Vets per capita
  • Pet services per capita (dog walkers, pet boarding and sitting, pet groomers, and pet training)
  • Parks per capita
Once we eliminated any places that didn’t have any listings in these categories, we were left with a total of 27 suburbs, which we ranked with scores from one to 27 in all of the above categories. After that, we averaged these out into an overall Big Deal Score for each place. The lowest scores went to our 10 most pet friendly places near Sacramento. To see how the rest ranked, just hop, waddle, slither, gallop, or bound down to the table below. Or, you know, just scroll down. That’ll work too.
