This restaurant has Assisi written all over it. It’s a cozy, romantic spot and you definitely feel like you're being welcomed into someone's home when you're here because, well, you are: an Italian Mom owns the restaurant and her lucky children help her run it. And, trust me, everything tastes like mom made it. Since it’s an Italian tapas place, the dishes are small (meaning you can try a bit of everything, which you will be very happy about). The meatballs are so good that all other meatballs for the rest of your life will pale in comparison. Also, the Crostini con Albicocche e Formaggio di Capra is a must try: toasted ciabatta topped with apricot and goat cheese. The cook’s daughter makes all the desserts and they are amazing. Try the Cassata di Ricotta e Frutta Secca (a ricotta mousse dessert). You’re welcome.

While New Haven is known for its excellent “apizza” (as it’s called in New Haven) no apizza joint does it like Modern. Modern Apizza is the kind of pizza you order for take-out, but have to start eating in the car before you get home. The crust is that perfect mix of crispy/chewy: crispy on the outside, and chewy on the inside. There’s some amazingly good sausage and pepper pizza. But if you’re a vegetarian: have no fear. The veggie bomb pizza is every veggie’s dream: loaded with spinach, broccoli, olives, mushroom, pepper, onion, and garlic over delicious cheese and Modern’s homemade sauce. Trust me: it is oh so satisfying!
