Chicago is one of those cities where being young and in love is just more exciting. It’s like the Paris of the U.S.—just friendlier. But what happens once you’ve passed that single but dating phase of your relationship and settled into coupledom? How about a couple of years down the line when you’re ready to move in together, buy a house, or dare we say it… maybe even start a family? These Are The 10 Best Chicago Suburbs For Young Couples

Maybe you’re not quite to the family stage yet, but if you are ready to take your relationship to a more serious level, these 10 Chicago suburbs have everything you two will need:
1. Round Lake
2. Cary
3. Lake in the Hills
4. Winfield
5. Mundelein
6. New Lenox
7. Glencoe
8. La Grange
9. Monee
10. Lake Villa
We came up with this list of Chicago’s best suburbs for young couples by looking at all of the larger places nearby in terms of these criteria:
  • Percent of population under five
  • Percent of population between 22 and 34
  • Percent of population that’s married
  • Median household income
  • Median home value
  • Crimes per 100K people
  • GreatSchools.org City Rating
We crunched some numbers, did some math, and boom—we had our list of 10 places. Don’t worry, we’ll talk more about the methodology later on, first, let’s take a closer look at our 10 best ‘burbs for young couples.

1. Round Lake

Key Stats:

  • Population under five: 10.4 percent
  • Population between 22-34: 20 percent
  • Married population: 61.7 percent
If you’re looking for a place outside of Chicago filled with other young families, Round Lake might be where your search begins and ends. Of all the places we looked at, Round Lake had the second highest percentage of children under five, and some of the most married couples around—particularly from 22 to 34. The only drawback here was that it only got a 4 out of 10 from GreatSchools.org, which means that in general, the schools here aren’t as good as in some of our other suburbs. Of course this is a blanket statement and there are exceptions to the rule (like Park West), but overall, if you’re looking not just for parents in your peer group but for a stellar education, you might want to continue your search.

2. Cary

Key Stats:

  • Married population: 62.7 percent
  • Median household income: $101,786
  • Crimes per 100K people: 785
  • GreatSchools.org city rating: 9 out of 10
Unlike Round Lake, Cary doesn’t have that young of a population, and therefore has fewer young kids as well—but on the bright side, it does have a reputation for good schools. Out of 10, it gets a nine from GreatSchools.org for test scores, student growth, and college readiness. The only downside to living in Cary is the cost—which is probably a pretty good reason why more young couples don’t live here now. But hey, if you can afford it, why not? It might be nice to have some older parents around who know the ropes—and older kids only mean more babysitters for your toddler.

3. Lake in the Hills

Key Stats:

  • Married population: 60.9 percent
  • Crimes per 100K people: 371
With a name like “Lake in the Hills,” you better hope this village is as magical a place to grow up as it sounds. Annndd, it kind of is. Your young kids will love the various programs put on by the Parks and Rec Department, they’ll love the nature, swimming in Woods Creek Lake, and fishing at Goose Lake. And the best part, you can take them to do all of these things without worrying about their safety since Lake in the Hills had the lowest number of crimes of any other suburb we looked at.

4. Winfield

Key Stats:

  • Married population: 62.4 percent
  • Crimes per 100K people: 463
  • GreatSchools.org city rating: 9 out of 10
The adorable Village of Winfield is known for its quiet residential streets, family-friendly vibe, safety, and for “growing smart, in harmony with nature.” Well, we’d certainly say so. After all, their smart kiddos earned themselves a 9 out of 10 from GreatSchools.org, and with the second lowest crime rate near Chicago, you know they’re doing something right. However, if you’re looking for fellow young parents or young couples, you’ll likely have a harder time finding them here. This might be because of a higher than average home price.

5. Mundelein

Key Stats:

  • Population under five: 7.5 percent
  • Crimes per 100K people: 949
This certainly isn’t the first award under Mundelein’s belt in recent years. It’s received a Governor’s Hometown Award, it ranked as one of the Top 100 Safest Cities in America, and it’s CALEA Accredited, which basically just means, this place is really safe. We know we mentioned safety twice here, but in this case it’s really important. 7.5 percent of residents are under five-years-old, giving Mundelein more tiny residents than most places near Chicago. Interestingly, even though there are tons of young kids, it has about an average number of young people—probably due to the median home price of $237,100.

6. New Lenox

Key Stats:

  • Population under five: 8.4 percent
  • Married population: 63.4 percent
  • Median household income: $93,609
This village in Will County is known as a family-oriented community, where things like Flag Football, summer camps, spring break camps, holiday camps… okay, basically a camp for every day of the week, are not out of the ordinary. This has a lot to do with the fact that many of its residents are under five—and that Mom and Dad are making well above the Illinois median household income ($56,853), so they can probably afford it.

7. Glencoe

Key Stats:

  • Married population: 73.1 percent
  • Median household income: $161,976
  • Crimes per 100K people: 814
  • GreatSchools.org City Rating: 10 out of 10
Glencoe is one of the more affluent suburbs outside of Chicago, which means it can afford to take excellent care of its residents. It’s safe, children receive nothing but the best when it comes to schooling (it recently ranked as our best Chicago suburb for education), and everyone seems to be married (seriously, everyone—it has the most married couples out of any place nearby). The only thing is, with such a high price tag, there aren’t very many young residents—in fact, it had the fewest residents between 22 and 34 in the Chicago area.

8. La Grange

Key Stats:

  • Population under five: 8.1 percent
  • Median household income: $100,603
  • Crimes per 100K people: 853
  • GreatSchools.org City Rating: 10 out of 10
Think of La Grange like the starter version of Glencoe—residents still make a very high median household income, the schools are just as good, it’s still safe, and yes, it’s still expensive—just not as expensive as Glencoe. The added bonus of La Grange is that it has more residents under the age of five, and overall, seems to be just a tad more friendly for younger couples looking to start a family. Again, if you can afford it. If you can’t, you might want to look into the next place on our list.

9. Monee

Key Stats:

  • Population under five: 11.4 percent
  • Married population: 66.5 percent
  • Median home value: $168,900
Recently, Monee came in as our most affordable place near Chicago, based on home prices, rent prices, income, and cost of living. Which is probably exactly why Monee has so many residents under the age of five—raising kids is expensive! It also had some of the most married couples in the area, many of whom are in the 20s and 30s range. The only major drawback in Monee was its low ranking for schools—just a 4 out of 10. But hey, you’re young—this might be a great place to start out, save some money, and then move to Glencoe.

10. Lake Villa

Key Stats:

  • Married population: 62.3 percent
  • Crimes per 100K people: 864
  • GreatSchools.org City Rating: 8 out of 10
When you realize that Lake Villa was originally created as a resort town where the wealthy came to get some R&R, its natural beauty is not really surprising. Today it’s more residential, but it still has that welcoming feel. It’s safe, beautiful, has a high population of married people, the schools are excellent… It’s kind of like walking into a postcard for America.

It’s Time To Look For That Starter Home

A lot of the time when people hear “suburbs,” they run for the hills like a commitment phobe who gets a wedding ring. As you can see, though, the suburbs are a great place to settle down with your significant other. Whatever kind of place you’re looking for, we can help you there. Just get in touch.

Our Methodology

Just like with any of our other Big Deal Lists, we created this one by gathering up all of the places outside of Chicago with populations of 5,000. Then, with sources like the U.S. Census, AreaVibes, and GreatSchools.org, we looked at each place in terms of these criteria:
  • Percent of population under five
  • Percent of population between 22 and 34
  • Percent of population that’s married
  • Median household income
  • Median home value
  • Crimes per 100K people
  • GreatSchools.org City Rating
Any places that didn’t have complete data were eliminated, which left us with a total of grand total of 119 suburbs. We ranked these with scores from one to 119 in each category and averaged them into one overall Big Deal Score for each place. The 10 lowest scores went to our 10 winners.
