These 15 Akron Restaurants Will Blow The Taste Buds Out Of Your MouthSo maybe Akron isn’t at the top of your list of foodie places to visit… but at the end of this list it just might be.
1. Luigi’s Pizza Pies Take The Cake
105 N Main St
Yelp: 4 Stars - 131 Reviews There’s a long standing debate over who has the best pizza pies in Akron, but Luigi’s wins out. Their thick, bready crust made crunchy and crispy on the outside is the perfect accompaniment to the heavy handed gobs of cheese, a tangy, tasty sauce, and delicious meats. Don’t stop at the pizza, though. Their baked pastas, especially the lasagna, are just as good as their pies, and the salads are huge and some of the best in the city. If you have a hankering for Italian, Luigi’s will take care of everything.
2. The Best Hamburgs Are At Swensons Drive-In
658 E Cuyahoga Falls Ave
Yelp: 4.5 Stars - 106 Reviews The entire Swenson’s ‘burg’ experience is incredible. You pull up and a car-hop comes running out (seriously, they’re always running) to take your order, and after tossing a number on your windshield they run off to order you the best hamburg you’ve ever had. All the burgs are delicious, but if you really want an explosion of flavor you must try the Galley Boy: Two juicy patties, grilled onions, melted cheese to hold it all together and two BBQ sauces. Plus, they stick a toothpick with an olive in the top - it’s like the martini of burgers.
3. Feed Your Flavor Cravings At Crave
57 E. Market St
Yelp: 4 Stars - 118 Reviews If you’re craving a real food experience, there’s no better place in Akron. The decor is modern yet elegant with romantic mood lighting, but what really draws people is the unique and extensive menu, great wine list and delicious martinis. Feeling like seafood? Try the Thai curry lobster with kaffir lime vanilla bean vinaigrette. Love chicken and waffles? There’s nothing better than their cinnamon sage waffles with buttermilk fried chicken. Whatever you get here, it will be delicious, perfectly executed and full flavor—especially the “Pound Cake Cupcake.” Just trust me.
4. Load Up On Tacos At Ranchero’s
286 E Cuyahoga Falls Ave
(330) 258 - 2910
Yelp: 4.5 Stars - 102 Reviews Ranchero’s is a humble abode - not for the pretentious, but everyone knows you find the best tacos at the hole-in-the-wall establishments. The chorizo is spot-on, the salsas are fresh, and the al pastor is sweet, salty and super tender. The don’t give you any of those tiny, diced onions either—they served them large and sauteed for extra flavor. Try their pickled cactus salad as a topper, and don’t forget the homemade horchata.
5. Nosh On Fresh Sushi Rolls At Sakura
3900 Medina Rd
Yelp: 4.5 Stars - 73 Reviews Sakura is the freshest sushi and sashimi in Akron, hands down. Their special maki rolls are just that - special - and their variety is larger than most other places in town. The fire maki roll with spicy salmon and tempura crunchies on the inside, and wasabi tobiko, a drizzle of sriracha sauce and… wait for it… lemon on the outside. If that doesn’t sound like it would be amazing, trust me, it is.
6. Shop And Dine For Local And Organic Fare At The Mustard Seed Market
Mustard Seed Market & Cafe
3885 Medina Rd
Yelp: 4 Stars - 54 Reviews Not only is the Mustard Seed Market a great place to shop for local, organic food, but the cafe serves up some delicious meals as well. The grilled stuffed banana peppers, bison burger, Thai coconut milk soup, and spinach and sweet potato salad are all to die for. Plus, it’s the best way to keep from overspending at the market, because anything you order will have your belly full and happy.
7. Satiate Your Sweet Tooth At The West Side Bakery
West Side Bakery
2303 W Market St
Yelp: 4 Stars - 28 Reviews For pastries, desserts and the best cakes in Akron, West Side Bakery is a must. They have everything you could possibly want from a bakery, and they’re all over-the-top delicious: Baklava, sugar cookies, breads, Tiramisu, cupcakes, sandwiches, individual New York style cheesecakes and the the most beautiful cakes in the city. Seriously, no matter the occasion—a birthday, wedding, or 2 p.m. cupcake craving, you can’t go wrong with West Side.
8. Get Your Late Night Grub On At Mr. Zub’s
Mr. Zub’s Deli at the Matinee
812 W Market Street
Yelp: 4.5 Stars - 43 Reviews Mr. Zub’s sandwiches are the perfect food after a night of one too many beers (or just a hankering for some awesome food), and they’re open until 3 a.m. most nights. Their menu is a little overwhelming, so let me break it down for you: Choose the Uncle Rico. Topped high with juicy, tasty roast beef, layered with crunchy-on-the-outside, soft-in-the-middle tater tots, and then smeared with a generous helping of onion and chive cream cheese on a wheat bagel, it will knock your socks off.
9. Get The Best Diner Food You’ve Ever Had At Honeymoon Grille
3458 Manchester Rd
Yelp: 5 stars, 9 reviews Honeymoon Grille is a great little breakfast and lunch joint with top-notch food. They offer the full breakfast fixings and serve it all day, in addition to their wraps, sandwiches and salads for lunch. The service is impeccable, which let’s face it, is kind of hard to find in Akron. Every menu item is homemade and delicious, and the prices are more than reasonable. They close at 2pm every day, so be sure to get there early!
10. Chow Down On Grilled Cheese At The Lockview
207 S Main St
Yelp: 4 Stars - 103 Review The Lockview is a great place to enjoy simple, tasty food in a casual, funky atmosphere. The salads are super fresh, the soups are flavorful, and they have the best grilled cheese you’ve ever had, period. While all 13 grilled cheese sandwiches are the bomb, I’m partial to the #3: Pepper jack cheese and sliced sautéed jalapeños on cheddar cheese sourdough. with a side of blue cheese dressing. Mmmmm. The appetizers alone are worth the trip, like the basket of hot, cinnamon sugar sweet potato fries, crispy tater tots, or macaroni and cheese bites served with Sriracha ketchup. They also have the best veggie burger in the area, smothered with roasted red peppers, juicy portobello mushrooms and smeared with garlic aioli. Divine.
11. Dive Into Sandwich Heaven At Gasoline Alley
870 N Cleveland Massillon Road
Yelp: 4 Stars - 61 Reviews Gasoline Alley is actually in Bath, but still definitely worth mentioning. Completely unassuming from the outside, you’d never guess this little restaurant has such a great beer list and absolutely delicious food. This place is truly a hidden gem. You can fill up your tank with steaming garlicky mussels or one of their famous sandwiches or pizzas. Highly recommended is the corned beef reuben on potato latkes with fries, and the onion rings and New England style clam chowder can brighten any day. If you’re not impressed with the extensive beer list, then try one of their martinis, like the garlic smashed potato martini or the angel food cake specialtini.
12. Treat Yourself To Cilantro’s Desserts
Cilantro Thai & Sushi
326 S Main St
Yelp: 3.5 Stars - 77 Reviews Both the Thai and sushi dishes are delicious at Cilantro, but honestly, no matter what you choose you can’t go wrong. What’s more important than all this is the fact that their desserts are mouth watering. Particularly the mango sticky rice. Made with traditional Thai sweet sticky rice, ripe mango and coconut ice cream, it’s perfect. Sweet, sticky, creamy and fruity. Their other desserts are amazing too, like their Thai custard sticky rice and their strawberries with a creamy Bailey’s sauce.
13. Wally’s Waffles Are Hot Off The Griddle
845 W Market
Yelp: 4 Stars - 43 Reviews Wally has been around since 1975 and just keeps getting better and better. The waffles are made with fresh ingredients, homemade batters, and each waffle is made-to-order and brought to you piping hot. Go healthy with the Better Day: Oat bran batter loaded with apples, raisins, pecans, coconut, pineapple and carrots, topped with sliced banana. Or go all out with the Elvis: A crispy waffle with bacon, peanut butter chips, honey and sliced banana. Thank you, thank you very much.
14. Dine In Style At Edgar’s
530 Nome Ave
Yelp: 4.5 Stars - 24 Reviews Edgar’s is hidden gem in west Akron, with a beautiful balcony overlooking the Good Park golf course. It’s a great, relaxing spot for an intimate dinner and on the weekends it’s the perfect spot for live music. The hog shanks fall off the bone and the smoked prime rib is to die for, but the real star is the Creole stuffed pork chop, a 10-oz. center cut, bone-in chop with shrimp and crawfish stuffing, Creole Yukon gold potato salad, grilled asparagus and crispy prosciutto. Top it all off with a Naughty Martini, with olive juice and big, juicy blue cheese-stuffed olives. Magnificent.
15. Swoon Over Artsy Fare At The Blue Door
The Blue Door Cafe & Bakery
1970 State Rd. (Cuyahoga Falls)
Yelp: 4.5 Stars - 125 Reviews The Blue Door Cafe & Bakery is technically in Cuyahoga Falls, but since it’s only a 10 minute drive away, and because this story is about places that blow the taste buds out of your mouth, I’m including it anyway. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but totally worth the hype. Each menu item is a work of art, using local, fresh, seasonal, and all natural ingredients, so no corn syrup or hydrogenated oils. The pastries and breads are fresh baked, in-house, and their breakfast and brunch is out of this world. My top recommendation for dinner is braised bison osso buco with morel mascarpone. Yes, I said morel mascarpone. Run, don’t walk. What’s your go-to for great grub in Akron? Tell us in the comments below
