In eastern El Sobrante, far from the urban edge, architect John Wilson has preserved the rural character of one of the last such neighborhoods in the Bay Area. A private road winds up to a hilltop between Sobrante Ridge Preserve and Pinole Valley Park. The Bay Area Ridge Trail runs nearby. Some houses up here might have been lifted from the Shire, and artists from the City own second homes here as studios -- the commute is reasonable (21 miles to SF center, 12 to Berkeley). You can see out over the village to Wildcat and Tilden Parks, to the full length of the East Bay Ridge, and then on to sunsets over SF Bay and Mount Tam. And all this is still affordable.
