We’ve ranked the top 10 largest towns and cities in Rhode Island according to their crime levels. Here are the 10 safest cities in Rhode Island:
1. South Kingstown

The safest place to live in Rhode Island is South Kingstown. This town of around 30,600 people is the largest town in Washington County, in the south of Rhode Island. The town was formed when Kings Towne was split into North and South in 1722. The crime index is 62 – 100 being the safest.
First settled in 1635, and incorporated as a town in 1746, Cumberland is today the second safest town in Rhode Island. The crime index is 54. Cumberland has a population around 33,500, making it the eighth largest town in the state.
3. East Providence
The city of East Providence is in the east of Rhode Island and it’s the fifth largest city in the state, with a population around 47,000. East Providence is ranked the third safest city in Rhode Island, and its crime index is 27 percent below state average.
4. North Providence

North Providence is only slightly behind East Providence when it comes to crime levels. It’s the fourth safest city in Rhode Island, and has a crime index that’s 18 percent below state average. North Providence was established back in 1636.

Named for the English city of Coventry, this town is the fifth safest place to live in Rhode Island. The crime index is essentially the same as for North Providence. Coventry was originally a rural part of Warwick but became a town around 1741.
Cranston is the third largest city, and the sixth safest city in Rhode Island. It was named within the top 100 Best Places to Live by Money magazine in 2006, and according to one report it’s among the top 25 safest cities in the U.S. By our rankings, the crime index for Cranston is right on target with the average for the entire state.
With a population around 82,600, Warwick is the second largest city in Rhode Island. Founded in 1642 the city has seen plenty of important events in the history of the country. Today it is the seventh safest city in Rhode Island with a crime index just above the state average.
The City of Pawtucket borders on Providence, in the north east of the state. Pawtucket is another historic beauty and, thanks to be the home of Slater Mill, it played a very important role in the American Industrial Revolution. Pawtucket is the eighth safest city in Rhode Island – the crime index is 36 percent above state average.
Woonsocket comes in our list as the ninth safest city in Rhode Island. The crime index is 37 percent above the state average. Woonsocket is the sixth largest city in Rhode Island and is just south of the Massachusetts state line. Around 41,000 people live here.
Providence has a lot going for it: it’s the capital and largest city of Rhode Island, and was one of the first cities to be established in the United States. It’s thick with history, but also a modern city so residents get the best of historic charm with the best of modern conveniences. The only drawback is that Providence has the worst crime rating (63 percent above state average) and is therefore one of the least safe cities in Rhode Island.
